Description

For all those who feared that their Game Boy game days were just a memory, don't worry anymore! This handheld computer may be dead, but with this pack, you'll have the opportunity to resurrect them. We have assembled all the parts you need to assemble the hoses for your own GameGRRL - a portable Raspberry Pi powered by MAME and NES emulators.

This version DOES NOT INCLUDE RASPBERRY PI ZERO! It is also a do-it-yourself kit that requires the 3D printing of the box and the assembly of the project.

This portable game emulation station is called the PiGRRL and is powered by a Raspberry Pi Zero and a PiTFT screen.  You'll have to do the 3D printing, assembly and installation yourself to get games, but the learning guide will help you get through the process.

This PiGRRL pack contains just about everything you need for this project EXCEPT the case, battery, wires and hardware, as well as the hand tools for welding, cutting, Pi Zero, etc. You will need to print your own case in 3D - but check out our 3D Printing Guide for the pack so that you or a friend can print a case in 3D. You will also need a 2000mAh Lipoly battery and we only guarantee that it will work with our batteries. Using a wrong polarity or chemical battery can destroy your PiGrrl project.

With this update, we really wanted to make construction easier. We cut the construction time in half by making a custom gamepad PCB. Simply solder the buttons and an IDC box header to the game controller's PCB board - no more tedious wiring of the buttons!

You will also need to weld the parts together, so many hand tools and other small parts such as silicone wires, screws or blue staples are needed. Read the tutorial to see what more you need to complete this project!

Please note that this is a medium difficulty project that uses many of Maker's skills such as soldering, 3D printing and Linux installation! The PiGRRL Zero is a fun version, but it's a do-it-yourself project, it won't have perfect audio/video/emulation capabilities. In particular, the Zero is quite slow compared to Pi 2 or 3 and can imitate the NES-complexity-max games quite well.
