Description

Breathe easily with the multi-pixel gas sensor SGP30, a fully integrated MOX gas sensor. This is a very fine Sensirion air quality sensor with I2C interface and fully calibrated output signals with a typical accuracy of 15% of the measured values. The PMS combines several metal oxide detection elements on a single chip to provide more detailed air quality signals.

It is a gas sensor that can detect a wide range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and H2 and is designed to monitor indoor air quality. Once connected to your microcontroller, it will return a Total Volatile Organic Compound (TVOC) reading and an equivalent carbon dioxide (eCO2) reading on I2C.

The SGP30 is equipped with a MOX sensor for "standard"hot plate, as well as a small microcontroller that controls the plate power supply, reads the analog voltage, follows the basic calibration, calculates TVOC and eCO2 values and provides an I2C interface to read. Unlike the CCS811, this sensor does not require an extension of the I2C clock.

This part will measure the concentration of eCO2 (calculated carbon dioxide equivalent) in the range of 0 to 60,000 parts per million (ppm) and the concentration of TVOC (total volatile organic compound) in the range of 0 to 60,000 parts per billion (ppb).

Please note that this sensor, like all VOC/gas sensors, has a variability and to obtain accurate measurements you will need to calibrate it against known sources! However, for general environment sensors, this will give you a good idea of trends and comparisons. The SGP30 has built-in calibration capabilities, note that the eCO2 is calculated on the basis of the H2 concentration, it is not an "ideal" CO2 sensor for laboratory use.

Another interesting feature of this sensor is the ability to adjust the humidity compensation for greater accuracy. An external humidity sensor is required, then the relative humidity (RH%) is written to I2C on the sensor, which allows it to better calculate TVOC/eCO2 values.

For your convenience, we have selected and placed the sensor on a printed circuit board with a 1.8V regulator and level adapter so that it can be easily used with your favorite 3.3V or 5V microcontroller.
